Fashion as an industry, has a very large negative environmental impact. Consumers want to support companies that have a positive impact on their communities and the planet. Use these criteria when choosing sustainable men fashion brands.

Materials

Most of the impact of a garment comes from the material. Sustainable men fashion brands must offer garments made of sustainable fabrics.

Natural fabrics are best and include these: best outdoor clothing brands provide Climate and water details of their products

  • Organic cotton is much better than conventional cotton, as it is grown without harmful chemicals like pesticides, insecticides and fertilizer. Thus, it is safer to wear. It also requires less water and land to grow, than conventional cotton.
  • Organic hemp and linen have similar environmental benefits as organic cotton.
  • Responsible wool: although wool is not vegan, it is biodegradable and has loads of benefits. Certifications like the ZQ Merino wool label and Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) will help you to choose ethical wool.
  • TENCEL (modal and lyocell). TENCEL is the Austrian producer of fabric made with cellulose fibers from wood pulp. Lyocell is made from eucalyptus wood pulp and modal from beech wood pulp. A closed-loop and solvent-spinning process is used to render fiber from wood. This process reuses 99% of the water and solvent. Wood needs to come from sustainable sources, like FSG certified wood.

Recycled Polyester and Recycled Nylon: Although these are synthetic and therefore not biodegradable or compostable, they don’t use virgin plastic. Plastic waste that is already in existence, is recycled to give it another life. Recycled polyester comes from PET plastic water bottles and recycled nylon (Econyl) comes from discarded fishing nets. Do be aware that microplastics are released when washing them, so use a Guppy Friend washbag, available from Organic Basics, when washing recycled synthetics.

Bamboo is a tricky one. Although it is a natural fiber, turning it into a textile involves toxic chemicals, thereby canceling any possible environmental benefits. So, unless a brand uses a sustainable closed-loop process, and tells you how it is done, avoid bamboo. Thought produces sustainable bamboo underwear.

Ethical Practices And Transparency

Although materials have a huge environmental impact, there are many social and human rights issues involved with the clothing industry. The best men outdoor clothing brands must be transparent and demonstrate control and traceability of their supply chains.

That way the company actively ensures all entities maintain fair labor practices and pay for workers. So, look for third party certifications and audits, which help prevent greenwashing.Fair Trade logo

  • B-corp is the best certification. For a company to achieve B-corp status, they have to rank extremely high in more than 80 impact areas. Standards must be maintained for annual audits. All B-corp annual assessments are available to the public, so a brand cannot lie about it.
  • Fair Trade: For a brand to be Fair Trade registered, they have to adhere to fair labor conditions, fair pay, proper training and reasonable working hours in producing all materials and products. Fair Trade also ensures human rights are not violated, so guard against unsafe work environments, harassment, discrimination, abuse and child or forced labor. Certification is done by a few Fair Trade bodies around the world.
  • Oeko-Tex 100: This certification ensure no harmful chemicals, like heavy metals, formaldehyde, colorants, azo-dyes are used during manufacturing. Apart from being good for sustainability, it is also ethical as workers are not constantly exposed to toxins.
  • Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS): fabrics are grown and produced without the use of chemicals, pesticides and fertilizers.
  • Other worthy certifications: Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production (WRAP), Business for Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI), Social Accountabiity International (SA8000) and Fair Wear Foundation. low impact website is part of sustainable men fashion brands

Green Business Practices

These are all the ways in which a brand works to reduce its environmental impact.

It could include things like textile waste considerations, carbon off-setting, recycling production materials, use of renewable energy, garment recycling programs and plastic free and low waste packaging.

Charitable Giving and Community Projects

This is not a make or break, as many small brands simply don’t have the budget yet to be sustainable, as well as charitable. However, it is great to see that larger brands are supporting communities and charitable projects.

Final Thoughts On Sustainable Men Fashion Brands

Sustainable men’s clothing brands use as few resources, like water and energy, as possible during the production processes. They also don’t pollute the surrounding environment. Support these ethical men outdoor clothing brands for a fairer and healthier planet for all.

  3. Thanks for the great information Lin,

I never knew there were so many sustainable outdoor clothing brands. As an avid outdoorsman, I know the importance of comfortable well fitting clothing that keeps me warm and dry when the need arises.

Very interesting to see how they are able to use mostly natural and recycled fibers to produce such good looking clothing while minimizing their carbon footprint. Sustainable wool for outdoor clothing reminds me that 80 years ago everybody wore wool outdoor clothing. Seems we’ve come full circle and realized that natural fibers actually perform as well if not better than the synthetics.

  4. I really appreciate this site.  We have 6 kids.   They question every piece of clothing we give them as present in terms of materials used, packaging, labor etc.  You site, with all the detail offered, gives detailers about the retailers not only in terms of being green but also socially responsible.  We have just recently heard about Free Trade through out son who works for an organic produce company.  We are excited to learn about the companies engaged in that practice.  I have not taken the time to look at what company offers as yet, but I will.  You have made shopping for our kids much easier.

  5. It’s good to be reminded to care for the environment when choosing what kind of clothing we buy or wear. In countries like the Philippines, where people are being visited by natural calamities almost every month and experiencing the impact of climate change, patronizing environment-friendly companies and products is highly encouraged.

In a place like ours here, the clothing that’s made of organic cotton is the most preferred among the list you have provided. Of course, people here also like organic hemp and linen, but due to the extremely warm weather, we like that one that’s cool to the skin during sunny days. Even this one that I am wearing right now, is made of organic cotton.

Thanks for this post, I will bookmark this so the next time I need to buy men outdoor clothing, I know where to go online.

  6. I think that it is fabulous when you can select clothes that are sustainable and have qualities such as utilizing products that are carbon-neutral, using zero plastics or involve materials and processes that are recyclable. You really do feel that you are playing your part in reducing global warming and other deleterious earth impacts when you do. These types of green business practices do have an add-on price to the traditional manufacturing process which causes them to be largely unavailable and price uncompetitive, particularly in non-US or third-world markets.  If I desired to buy any of these listed items as I am in the Caribbean, I would have to purchase them online, which immediately adds to my taxes and delivery charges which could add an additional 50 to 70% on my final price. The point is that many of us on this side of the planet who wish to participate in the green revolution, sustainable process and make ethical clothing choices just are not able to due to lack of choice and cost. Hopefully, this will change.

If your government imposes taxes on sustainable and eco friendly products, then it is time that you lobby your local government to drop import taxes on sustainable products. It is also a good opportunity to develop locally produced sustainable products.

  7. I love the shift towards sustainable clothing that has been going on in recent years.  You have listed some great brands here, there are some really great options to choose from.  I hope to see many more clothing companies offer sustainable clothing in the near future.  If they want to stay in business, I think they need to join this movement toward bettering the environment!

Out of the brands that you have listed here, I have only heard of Nudie Jeans.  Probably because they have been around for a while.  It seems that Europe is always ahead of us in North America when it comes to the environment.

    • I agree that for men outdoor clothing brands to stay in business, they will have to become more sustainable. But there also needs to be a shift in the mindset of consumers and demand eco friendly men clothing. PrAna is an ethical North American sustainable brand that has been around since 1992, so it is well worth checking them out. I hope it helps.

  11. I am really happy I have come across your website for a variety of reasons.
The use of sustainability and low environmental impact of goods ( not just clothing) is something that we should all be embracing. And in the past I was probably not as aware as I should have been, and even when focused on outdoor apparel I tended to be more focused on brand than usability.
The products that come to mind are Paddy Pallin and RM Williams. And while there products are of great quality ( and priced accordingly) I would strongly doubt there focus is on low environmental impact. In my defence I also bought “King G” , yes Australian. But more for the price factor than anything else.

And this is why it makes me happy to see products and companies.I,e this. I.e. All birds, I am a NewZealander and the others companies.

I live in Vietnam and am a strong supporter of Fair trade, thus it was great to see the flat marketing model from producer to consumer. I hope this is something that will continue.

Are these products available to be shipped to Vietnam. As much as I would love to support ( and these types of things I do) it has to be within a financial margin that I can afford.

Whatever your answer, I will be sending this to my daughter and husband in Australia.

    Many thanks.

Humans are quite a creature of habit when it comes to clothes but if they wash well and are comfortable then I don’t see an issue with buying them.
